To play by ear is to play a musical instrument by remembering a tune you've heard and picking it out on the instrument without reading the music from a page.i

A: Maria, where did you learn to play that tune?i

B: I heard it a couple of times on the radio, and then sat down and picked it out on the piano.i

A: That's marvelous! Have you ever had any formal lessons?i

B: A few, but I don't read music very well. I mostly play by ear.i

The word cool normally means "somewhat cold". To lose one's cool is an expression that means "to become angry and lose control of one's feelings."i

A: Why is the ice cream all melted?i

B: Oh, no! I unplugged the fridge to clean behind it, and I forgot to plug it back in! It should still be cool, though.i

A: Well, it's not! Look at this! Everything in the freezer is ruined!i

B: Don't lose your cool ! I'll go to the store and replace everything.i
